NATM Guidelines for Recommended Minimum Manufacturing Practices for Light- and Medium-Duty Trailers (Guidelines) – Need to know the state towing laws in Ohio or the lighting specifications for a 20’ horse trailer? Since its inception, NATM has worked to improve the safety and reliability of the light- and medium-duty trailer manufacturing industry through the promotion of acceptable, recognized manufacturing practices. It has accomplished this through member education and publication of the Guidelines. This publication is a compilation of federal rules, regulations, and accepted industry standards and practices that govern trailer construction. The Guidelines are available at the NATM member rate and include topics such as brake requirements, state trailer laws, warning label laws, GVWR, excise tax, living quarters and more.
NATM Compliance Posters – The Guidelines are the basis for the NATM Compliance Program. The program evaluates the manufacturing processes of members that volunteer to undergo an NATM compliance consultation. The consultation examines the manufacturer's processes to assess whether it is designed to build trailers in accordance with applicable federal standards and regulations and accepted industry standards set forth in the Guidelines. Members in compliance with NATM Guidelines proudly display a red, white and blue compliance decal on their trailers. Help promote the NATM compliance program and your manufacturers that participate in the program by displaying the compliance poster, available to NATDA members at no additional cost. For a complete list of NATM compliant members, visit www.natm.com.
Updates on Regulatory and Legislative Issues – Over the years, NATM has developed reliable contacts throughout the U.S. Department of Transportation and Transport Canada. These relationships help NATM obtain answers to member’s regulatory questions. The association monitors legislation and rulemakings that could impact the trailer industry. The 2009 Transportation Reauthorization Bill will include legislation that could impact the trailer industry. NATM will keep members and dealer affiliates updated as this legislation is developing.
